Hotfix to help prevent creation of spurious writeaccess.ini files [HFXCC3040]
Published Date : 16 Jul 2003 Last Updated : 13 Feb 2020 Content Ref: DWN127540

Description

**Please note this only applies to Community Connect 3™ and RM Smart-Tools 3 networks**

Any references to Community Connect 3 in this document apply equally to RM Smart-Tools 3.

Problem Statement

Writeaccess.ini files created on the network (e.g. by using ACL Detective) may contain numerous spurious entries. These entries can cause problems such as workstation permissions being added or removed. For example, you may find that the Everyone group has suddenly gained Full Control to the C: drive of a workstation after a spurious writeaccess.ini file has taken effect.

Solution Statement

RM AppACLTool has been updated to limit the size of writeaccess.ini files. Installing HFXCC3040 will set a default maximum writeaccess.ini file size of 10kb. This limit is configurable should you wish to lower it, or need to raise it temporarily when creating a specific application. Almost all authentic writeaccess.ini files will have a size much less than 10kb.

What will the Hotfix change?

HFXCC3040 will update RM AppACLTool to version 2.20.0.0.

Who should install this Hotfix?

You should apply this hotfix if you are running a Community Connect 3 network upgraded to Service Release 2 or Service Release 3 and are experiencing the problem described in the Problem Statement section.

HFXCC3040 should be applied to all Community Connect 3 domain controllers on your network.  It does not need to be applied to Community Connect 3 workstations directly but you will need to restart workstations for the hotfix to be installed.

Platforms

Community Connect 3 networks should be fully upgraded to Service Release 2 or above before installing HFXCC3040.

Download Instructions

  1. Select the HFXCC3040.exe file to download.
  2. Choose to "Save" the file, browse to the location you wish to save it to and click OK.
  3. When it has downloaded follow the installation instructions below to install the hotfix on each Community Connect 3 domain controller.

Installation Instructions

Before installing the hotfix

Before installing HFXCC3040 you must ensure that the RM AppACLTool is not installed on any Community Connect 3 domain controller servers. To do this:

  1. Logon to a Community Connect 3 domain controller as Administrator. (Not systemadmin).
  2. Open the Control Panel and choose Add/Remove Programs.
  3. If the RM AppACLTool component is present, remove it.
  4. Note: If you receive a message that the network resource is unavailable, click the Browse button and browse to the following folder on the server: D:\RMNetwork\RMManage\Packages\Tools\RM AppACLTool\V2.x.0.0 (where x is the version number of the folder). Select the file RM AppACLTool.MSI and click the OK button.
  5. The RM AppACLTool component is now removed.
  6. Repeat the process on all Community Connect 3 domain controllers.

How to install the Hotfix

(NOTE: If you previously started to install the hotfix but cancelled the operation, follow the installation instructions in the 'Installing after cancelling a previous install' section below)

1.      Download HFXCC3040.

2.      Log on to your first Community Connect 3 domain controller as Administrator (not SystemAdmin) and copy the hotfix to a temporary location (e.g. D:\temp).

3.      Run the hotfix by double-clicking the self-extracting executable file (HFXCC3040.exe).  The hotfix will extract files automatically and run the RM Installation Assistant to install the hotfix.

4.      When prompted, click Continue.

5.      The installation will proceed automatically.  When prompted that the RM Installation Assistant has finished, click Finish.

6.      Repeat Steps 2-5 at all your other Community Connect 3 domain controllers.

7.      When all Community Connect 3 domain controllers have had the hotfix applied, restart your workstations for the hotfix to be applied fully.

Installing after cancelling a previous install

1.      Browse to D:\RMNetwork\RMManage\RM Hotfixes\HFXCC3040_extracted and double-click the file RM Installation Assistant.exe. (If this folder or its contents does not exist, re-run the HFXCC3040.exe file downloaded from the RM Support website).

2.      The RM Installation Assistant will initialise; click Continue to proceed with the installation.

3.      The installation should proceed automatically.

4.      Follow the procedures in 'How to install the Hotfix' from step 5 above.

Additional Information

HFXCC3040 prevents writeaccess.ini files of size greater than 10kb from being created. If this causes a problem you can re-set this value on your package building workstation(s). Furthermore, if you are still experiencing problems which you think may be caused by spurious writeaccess.ini files, try lowering this value. Almost all genuine writeaccess.ini files are smaller than 1kb in size and very few need to be greater than 5kb.

To change the default maximum size for writeaccess.ini files:

  1. Log in to your package building workstation as SystemAdmin.
  2. From the Start menu, select Run. Type 'regedit' and click OK.
  3. In the Registry, expand HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Research Machines\Network Management\AppACLTool.
  4. On the right-hand side of the Registry Editor window, double-click the key 'MaxWriteAccessIniSize'.
  5. Change the value as required. If necessary, ensure the Decimal radio button is selected - Note: the value is recorded in bytes.
  6. Click OK and then close the Registry Editor to save your change.
  7. Log off and back on for the change to take effect.
  8. Repeat steps 1-7 for any other package building workstations on your network.

Note: There may be existing writeaccess.ini files on your system which exceed the 10kb default maximum size. You should initially confirm whether these actually require to be so large. If the size is verified as correct, then the default maximum size for writeaccess.ini files should be increased to accommodate them.

Important - Interaction with RM Service Releases

HFXCC3040 is not included in Community Connect 3 Service Release 1, 2 or 3. (SR1, SR2 or SR3)

HFXCC3040 is included in Service Release 4.
