Published Date : 01 Jun 2004 Last Updated : 13 Feb 2020 Content Ref: DWN157397

Description

Note: The contents of this hotfix are included in Service Release 4 (SR4). If you have already installed SR4 you do not need to install this hotfix. If you have not yet installed SR4, you should consider installing this Critical Hotfix at your earliest convenience.

Any references to Community Connect 3 in this document apply equally to RM Smart-Tools 3.

Problem Statement

Microsoft have released significant security updates to key Windows components to improve their security and performance.  HFXCC3036 contains these updates in a format easily applied to Community Connect 3 networks.

Solution Statement

If you have not installed SR4, apply this hotfix immediately.

This hotfix should be installed on to all Community Connect 3 servers. servers and workstations will need to be restarted for the hotfix to be applied fully.

NOTE: HFXCC3036 requires Community Connect 3 Service Release 3 to have been applied to the network. The hotfix will check for the installation of Service Release 3 and will not install if it is not detected.

In addition, it requires Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1 (IE6 SP1) to have been installed on every server. IE6 SP1 is available as RM hotfix HFXCC3021 from DWN112776 in the  Other Useful Articles section.

What will the Hotfix change?

HFXCC3036 contains critical Microsoft security updates which are applicable to Windows 2000 Server and/or Windows XP Professional:

  1. MS03-011: MS VM Hotfix 816093 - for Community Connect 3 servers and workstations
  2. MS03-040: Internet Explorer 6 Hotfix 828750 - for Community Connect 3 servers and workstations
  3. MS03-030: DirectX Hotfix 819696 - for Community Connect 3 workstations
  4. SMB Hotfix 811492 - for Community Connect 3 workstations
  5. MS03-024: SMB Buffer Overrun Hotfix 817606 - for Community Connect 3 workstations

NOTE: The installation of MS03-011 (MS VM Hotfix 816093) on to Windows 2000 servers is dependent upon the Microsoft service pack level of the server. You will therefore need to know this for each server. Instructions for doing so are given in the Installation Instructions section below.

HFXCC3036 also contains HTML Help Hotfix 811630 for Community Connect 3 servers and workstations which is not installed by default and will only be required in certain circumstances. Please read the Additional Information at the end of this document.

More information on the issues resolved by each of these hotfixes is available from Microsoft's website (http://www.microsoft.com).

Additional Information

After installing HFXCC3036 you may receive errors when browsing in Windows Help. If you experience this problem, you should apply HTML Help Hotfix 811630 which is bundled with HFXCC3036. This hotfix resolves a known issue with HTML Help functionality introduced as a side-effect of installing recent Microsoft cumulative security patches for Internet Explorer. Internet Explorer 6 Hotfix 828750 is one of the hotfixes that may highlight this problem.

Note: You do not need to install HTML Help Hotfix 811630 on Community Connect 3 servers if you have already installed Windows 2000 Service Pack 4. In those circumstances, only follow the instructions below to install HTML Help Hotfix 811630 on to Community Connect 3 workstations.
