Critical Hotfix for new Microsoft security updates 17-02-04 [HFXCC3056]
Published Date : 23 Feb 2004 Last Updated : 13 Feb 2020 Content Ref: DWN197982

Description

Any references to Community Connect 3™ in this document apply equally to RM Smart-Tools 3.

Note: The components of this hotfix are included in Service Release 4 (SR4). If you have already installed SR4 you do not need to install this hotfix. If you have not yet installed SR4, you should consider installing this Critical Hotfix at your earliest convenience.

Problem Statement

Microsoft have released significant security updates to key Windows components to improve their security and performance. HFXCC3056 contains these updates in a format easily applied to Community Connect 3 networks.

Important: HFXCC3056 contains new security hotfixes and the security hotfixes previously delivered by HFXCC3054. HFXCC3056 supersedes HFXCC3054.

Wireless security hotfixes: In addition, HFXCC3056 delivers updated versions of two wireless hotfix packages originally released in HFXCC3054. These will not be automatically allocated to any locations and are present only to enable them to be fully un-installed if they are currently allocated on your network and you are experiencing wireless connectivity problems caused by the hotfixes. Please read the 'How to install the Hotfix' section below for more information.

Solution Statement

If you have not yet installed SR4, we recommend that you apply this hotfix as soon as possible.

If you have already installed HFXCC3054, install HFXCC3056 now. If you have not yet installed HFXCC3054, do not install it but rather only install HFXCC3056.

This hotfix should be installed on to all Community Connect 3 servers. Servers and workstations will need to be restarted for the hotfix to be applied fully.

Note: HFXCC3056 requires Service Release 3 to have been applied to the network. The hotfix will check for the installation of Service Release 3 and will not install if it is not detected.

Important: All servers and workstations will need to be rebooted in order to install this hotfix completely. You should therefore plan to install the hotfix out-of-hours to minimise disruption to your network.

What will the Hotfix change?

HFXCC3056 contains critical Microsoft security updates which are applicable to Microsoft Windows 2000 Server and/or Microsoft Windows XP Professional:

1.      MS03-049: Buffer Overrun in the Workstation Service Could Allow Code Execution (828749) - for Community Connect 3 servers

2.      MS03-051: Buffer Overrun in Microsoft FrontPage Server Extensions Could Allow Code Execution (813360)  - for Community Connect 3 workstations

3.      MS04-003: Buffer Overrun in MDAC Function Could Allow Code Execution (832483) - for Community Connect 3 servers and workstations

4.      MS04-007: ASN.1 Vulnerability Could Allow Code Execution (828028) - for Community Connect 3 servers and workstations

In addition, HFXCC3056 will deliver updated versions of the packages 'WPA Wireless Security Update 815485' and 'Wireless URP KB826942 for Windows XP SP1'. These packages were originally delivered by HFXCC3054 but caused wireless connectivity problems for several types of hardware. The new versions of these packages uninstall cleanly and so can be de-allocated if you are experiencing the problems described in TEC175657.

More information on the issues resolved by each of these hotfixes is available from Microsoft's website (http://www.microsoft.com).

Who should install this Hotfix?

You should apply this hotfix as soon as possible if you are running a Community Connect 3 network.

HFXCC3056 should be applied to all Community Connect 3 servers, ie all domain controllers and all member servers (eg DAMMS servers, MIS servers).  It does not need to be applied to Community Connect 3 workstations directly.

Note: You must have already installed Service Release 3 before installing HFXCC3056.

Important: All servers and workstations will need to be rebooted in order to install this hotfix completely. You should therefore plan to install the hotfix out-of-hours to minimise disruption to your network.

Installation Instructions

How to install the Hotfix

Note: If you previously started to install the hotfix but cancelled the operation, follow the installation instructions in the 'Installing after cancelling a previous install' section below

1.      Download HFXCC3056.

2.      Log on to your first Community Connect 3 domain controller as Administrator (not SystemAdmin) and copy the hotfix to a temporary location (eg D:\temp).

3.      Run the hotfix by double-clicking the self-extracting executable file (HFXCC3056.exe). The hotfix will extract files automatically and run the RM Installation Assistant to install the hotfix.

4.      When prompted, click Continue.

5.      The installation will proceed automatically.  When prompted that the RM Installation Assistant has finished, click Finish.

Note: After installation at a server, the server will need to be rebooted for the hotfix to be applied fully.

6.      Repeat Steps 2-5 at all your other Community Connect 3 domain controllers and member servers (including DAMMS and MIS servers).

Note: After installation at a server, the server will need to be rebooted for the hotfix to be applied fully.

7.      When all Community Connect 3 domain controllers have had the hotfix applied, restart all your Community Connect 3 workstations at your convenience for the hotfix to be applied fully. The following hotfix packages should be allocated: MDAC Security Hotfix 832483 (client); Microsoft ASN.1 Security Hotfix 828028 (client); Microsoft FPSE 2000 Hotfix KB813360 (client).

8.      If you installed HFXCC3054 and are experiencing wireless connectivity problems on mobile computers as described in TEC175657, it is recommended that you de-allocate the packages 'WPA Wireless Security Update 815485' and 'Wireless URP KB826942 for Windows XP SP1'. Do this via the RM Management Console.

9.      If you have uninstalled both 'WPA Wireless Security Update 815485' and 'Wireless URP KB826942 for Windows XP SP1' from all your Community Connect 3 workstations (including all mobile devices), you can safely delete these two packages by deleting the folders D:\RMNetwork\RMManage\Packages\Tools\WPA Wireless Security Update 815485 and D:\RMNetwork\RMManage\Packages\Tools\Wireless URP KB826942 for Windows XP SP1, on each Community Connect 3 domain controller. If you are not sure that all workstations have had the packages removed, it is safe to leave these packages present on servers.

Installing after cancelling a previous install

1.      Browse to D:\RMNetwork\RMManage\RM Hotfixes\HFXCC3056_extracted and double-click the file RM Installation Assistant.exe. (If this folder or its contents does not exist, re-run the HFXCC3056.exe file downloaded from the RM Support website).

2.      The RM Installation Assistant will initialise. Click Continue to proceed with the installation.

3.      The installation should proceed automatically. Click Finish when prompted.

4.      Follow the procedures in 'How to install the Hotfix' from step 5 above.

IMPORTANT - Interaction with RM Service Releases
