Critical Update for Microsoft security updates - April 2004 [HFXCC3066]
Published Date : 23 Apr 2004 Last Updated : 13 Feb 2020 Content Ref: DWN222563

Description

Any references to Community Connect 3 in this document apply equally to RM Smart-Tools 3.

Issue Statement

Microsoft have released significant security updates for Microsoft Windows.  HFXCC3066 contains these updates in a format easily applied to Community Connect 3 networks.

Solution Statement

We recommend that you apply this Security Update without delay.

IMPORTANT: During the installation of HFXCC3066 the Update Package List procedure and the allocation of four new Microsoft security update packages must be done manually. Please ensure that you fully complete all steps in the How to install the Security Update section of this article.

This Security Update should be installed on to all Community Connect 3 servers. Servers and workstations will need to be restarted for the Security Update to be applied fully.

NOTE: HFXCC3066 requires at least Service Release 3 and HFXCC3021 to have been applied to the network. HFXCC3021 is available from the 'Other Useful Articles' section below.

IMPORTANT: All servers will need to be rebooted in order to install this Security Update completely. You should therefore plan to install the Security Update out-of-hours to minimise disruption to your network.

NOTE: HFXCC3066 supersedes HFXCC3051 and HFXCC3051_v1_1.

What will the Security Update change?

HFXCC3066 contains the following critical Microsoft security updates:

1.      MS04-011: Security Update for Microsoft Windows (835732) - for Community Connect 3 servers and workstations;

2.      MS04-012: Cumulative Update for Microsoft RPC/DCOM (828741) - for Community Connect 3 servers and workstations;

3.      MS04-013: Cumulative Security Update for Outlook Express (837009) - for Community Connect 3 servers and workstations;

4.      MS04-014: Vulnerability in the Microsoft Jet Database Engine Could Allow Code Execution (837001) - for Community Connect 3 servers and workstations.

More information on the issues resolved by each of these hotfixes is available from Microsoft's website (http://www.microsoft.com/).

In addition, the Microsoft security updates contained in HFXCC3066 supersede some previously-released updates. HFXCC3066 will therefore remove the following workstation packages from Community Connect 3 networks, if they are present:

1.      HTML Converter Hotfix 823559 (client);

2.      RPC Interface Hotfix 823980 (client);

3.      RPCHotfix;

4.      Microsoft ASN.1 Security Hotfix 828028 (client).

NOTE: HFXCC3066 supersedes HFXCC3051 and HFXCC3051_v1_1.

Who should install this Security Update?

You should apply this Security Update without delay if you are running a Community Connect 3 network.

HFXCC3066 should be applied to all Community Connect 3 servers, i.e. all domain controllers and all member servers (e.g. DAMMS servers, MIS servers).  It does not need to be applied to Community Connect 3 workstations directly. It can be applied to Community Connect 3 servers running Windows 2000 Server or Windows Server 2003.

NOTE: You must have already installed Service Release 3 and HFXCC3021 before installing HFXCC3066. HFXCC3021 is available from the 'Other Useful Articles' section below.

IMPORTANT: All servers will need to be rebooted in order to install this Security Update completely. You should therefore plan to install the Security Update out-of-hours to minimise disruption to your network.

Download Instructions

1.      Select the HFXCC3066.exe file to download.

2.      Choose to "Save" the file, browse to the location you wish to save it to and click Save.

3.      When it has downloaded follow the installation instructions below to install the Security Update on each Community Connect 3 server.

Installation Instructions

How to install the Security Update

(NOTE: If you previously started to install the Security Update but cancelled the operation, follow the installation instructions in the 'Installing after cancelling a previous install' section below)

1.      Download HFXCC3066.

2.      Log on to your first Community Connect 3 domain controller as Administrator (not SystemAdmin) and copy the Security Update to a temporary location (e.g. D:\temp).

3.      Run the Security Update by double-clicking the self-extracting executable file (HFXCC3066.exe).  The Security Update will extract files automatically and run the RM Installation Assistant to begin the installation.

4.      When prompted, click Continue.

5.      The installation will proceed automatically.  When prompted that the RM Installation Assistant has finished, click Finish.

NOTE: After installation at a server, the server will need to be rebooted for the Security Update to be applied fully.

6.      Repeat Steps 2-5 at all your other Community Connect 3 domain controllers and member servers (including DAMMS and MIS servers).

NOTE: After installation at a server, the server will need to be rebooted for the Security Update to be applied fully.

7.      When all Community Connect 3 domain controllers have had the Security Update applied, log in to a Community Connect 3 workstation as the SystemAdmin user and open the RM Management Console.

8.      In the RM Management Console, expand Workstations, right-click on Main Site and choose to Update Package List. Click Yes to confirm this action.

9.   Log in to the first Community Connect 3 domain controller server in each site as the administrator user. Run Windows Explorer and browse to D:\RMNetwork\RMManage\Station Manager. Double-click on the file Healthcheck.exe, and select OK to start the Healthcheck, and OK again when it has completed.

10.  HFXCC3066 provides four new packages but does not automatically allocate them. You should allocate all four packages to all your workstations at your earliest convenience. NOTE: If you choose to allocate these packages at a later time, you must still complete all of steps 1-9 above now, including running the Update Package List and the Healthcheck.exe. The simplest way to do this is to allocate them at Main Site level. If you prefer to allocate them at a lower location, ensure that you allocate all four packages to all workstations. The four critical security packages are called:

        Microsoft Jet Database Security Update KB837001 (client)

        Outlook Express 6 SP1 Security Update KB837009 (client)

        Windows XP Security Update KB828741

        Windows XP Security Update KB835732

NOTE: You will need to ensure the 'Show RM system packages' box is ticked on the Packages screen of the RM Management Console to see the packages.

11.  Once you have allocated the packages to workstations, restart the workstations for the security update packages to be installed.

Installing after cancelling a previous install

1.      Browse to D:\RMNetwork\RMManage\RM Hotfixes\HFXCC3066_extracted and double-click the file RM Installation Assistant.exe. (If this folder or its contents does not exist, re-run the HFXCC3066.exe file downloaded from the RM Support website).

2.      Follow the procedures in 'How to install the Hotfix' from step 4 above.

IMPORTANT - Interaction with RM Service Releases

The components of HFXCC3066 will be included in a future Community Connect 3 Service Release or Microsoft Service Packs validated by RM.

The Update  can be installed on to networks running Community Connect 3 with Service Release 3 or Service Release 4.

HFXCC3066 is not included in Service Release 4 or Service Release 5. If you have any workstations still running Windows XP Service Pack 1 and install Service Release 5, you should re-apply HFXCC3066. Please refer to TEC599179 in the Other Useful Articles section below.

HFXCC3021 is included in Service Release 4.
