Software Update to allow restricted users to run Microsoft Access after installing SR4 [HFXCC3071]
Published Date : 09 Jul 2004 Last Updated : 13 Feb 2020 Content Ref: DWN254704

Description

**Please note this only applies to Community Connect 3™ and RM Smart-Tools 3 networks**

Before installing any update, please refer to TEC90813 and DWN59018 in the Other Useful Articles section below. These articles detail RM's recommendations regarding software update installation and support.

Any references to Community Connect 3™ Service Release 4 in this document apply equally to RM Smart-Tools 3 Service Release 4.

Issue

After installing Community Connect 3 Service Release 4 (SR4), Restricted users can no longer run Microsoft Access. If a Restricted user attempts to run a version of Microsoft Access, they receive an error message informing them that the program has been restricted by policy.

Before SR4, Restricted users could run Microsoft Access. An update to Group Policy introduced by SR4 has caused the change in behaviour. This update is by design as Microsoft Access grants end users access to significant security tools which, in the majority of cases, will be undesirable to give to Restricted users.

Note: Standard users in SR4 can run Microsoft Access and are unaffected by this issue.

Solution

HFXCC3071 updates the Restricted user type to allow members of this group rights to run Microsoft Access.

You should only apply this update if you have installed SR4 or above, have encountered the problem described above and wish to grant members of the Restricted user type rights to run and use Microsoft Access on the network.

What will this update change?
HFXCC3071 will update the Group Policy Objects relating to MicrosoftAccess for the Restricted user type.

Who should install this update?

You should only consider applying this update if you have installed SR4 or above and have verified that the update will resolve this specific issue.

HFXCC3071 should be applied to the Forest Root domain controller only. You do not need to restart any servers or workstations after installing this update but you should allow time for the change to replicate around all servers. Users will then need to log off and back on to a workstation to pick up the change.

  2. Choose to Save the file, browse to the temporary location you wish to save it to (for example D:\temp) and click Save.
