Microsoft security updates - July 2004 [HFXCC3067]
Published Date : 22 Jul 2004 Last Updated : 13 Feb 2020 Content Ref: DWN264388

Description

Before installing any software update, please refer to TEC90813 and DWN59018 in the Other Useful Articles section below. These articles detail RM's recommendations regarding software update installation and support.

Important: You may install this Security Update onto Service Release 3 (SR3) or Service Release 4 (SR4) networks. If you install this Security Update onto an SR3 network and you then later upgrade to SR4, you will need to perform an action to update the workstation build area. Please refer to the Additional Information section below about this task.

Any references to Community Connect 3™ in this document apply equally to RM Smart-Tools 3.

Issue

Microsoft have released significant security updates for Microsoft Windows.  HFXCC3067 contains these updates in a format easily applied to Community Connect 3 networks.

Solution

We recommend that you apply this Security Update without delay.

Important: During the installation of HFXCC3067, the Update Package List procedure, Station Manager HealthCheck and the allocation of new Microsoft security update packages must be done manually. Please ensure that you fully complete all steps in the How to install the Security Update section of this article.

This Security Update should be installed on to all Community Connect 3 servers. Servers and workstations will need to be restarted for the Security Update to be applied fully.

Note: HFXCC3067 requires at least Service Release 3 to have been applied to the network.

Important: All servers will need to be restarted in order to install this Security Update completely. You should therefore plan to install the Security Update out-of-hours to minimise disruption to your network.

What will the Security Update change?

HFXCC3067 contains the following Microsoft security updates:

1.      MS04-015: Vulnerability in Help and Support Center Could Allow Remote Code Execution (840374) - for Community Connect 3 servers running Windows Server 2003 and Community Connect 3 workstations;

2.      MS04-018: Cumulative Security Update for Outlook Express (823353) - for Community Connect 3 workstations;

3.      MS04-019: Vulnerability in Utility Manager Could Allow Code Execution (842526) - for Community Connect 3 servers running Windows 2000 Server

4.      MS04-020: Vulnerability in POSIX Could Allow Code Execution (841872) - for Community Connect 3 servers running Windows 2000

5.      MS04-022: Vulnerability in Task Scheduler Could Allow Code Execution (841873) - for Community Connect 3 servers running Windows 2000 Server and Community Connect 3 workstations;

6.      MS04-023: Vulnerability in HTML Help Could Allow Code Execution (840315) - for all Community Connect 3 servers and workstations;

7.      MS04-024: Vulnerability in Windows Shell Could Allow Remote Code Execution (839645) - for all Community Connect 3 servers and workstations;

8.      KB870669: Microsoft Data Access Components, Disable ADODB.Stream object from Internet Explorer - for Community Connect 3 workstations.

More information on the issues resolved by each of these hotfixes is available from the Microsoft Web site (http://www.microsoft.com).

In addition, the Microsoft security updates contained in HFXCC3067 supersede some previously-released updates. HFXCC3067 will therefore remove the following workstation packages from Community Connect 3 networks, if they are present:

1.      Outlook Express 6 SP1 Security Update KB837009 (client);

2.      Windows Shell Hotfix KB821557.

Who should install this Security Update?

You should apply this Security Update without delay if you are running a Community Connect 3 network.

HFXCC3067 should be applied to all Community Connect 3 servers, ie all domain controllers and all member servers (eg DAMMS servers, MIS servers).  It does not need to be applied to Community Connect 3 workstations directly. It can be applied to Community Connect 3 servers running Windows 2000 Server or Windows Server 2003.

Note: You must have already installed at least Service Release 3 before installing HFXCC3067.

Important: All servers will need to be rebooted in order to install this Security Update completely. You should therefore plan to install the Security Update out-of-hours to minimise disruption to your network.

Download Instructions

1.      Select the HFXCC3067.exe file to download.

2.      Choose to Save the file, browse to the location you wish to save it to and click Save.

3.      When it has downloaded follow the installation instructions below to install the Security Update on each Community Connect 3 server.

Installation Instructions

How to install the Security Update

(Note: If you previously started to install the Security Update but cancelled the operation, follow the installation instructions in the 'Installing after cancelling a previous install' section below)

1.      Download HFXCC3067.

2.      Log on to your first Community Connect 3 domain controller as Administrator (not SystemAdmin) and copy the Security Update to a temporary location (eg D:\temp).

3.      Run the Update by double-clicking the self-extracting executable file (HFXCC3067.exe).  The Security Update will extract files automatically and run the RM Installation Assistant to begin the installation.

4.      When prompted, click Continue.

5.      The installation will proceed automatically.  When prompted that the RM Installation Assistant has finished, click Finish.

Note: After installation at a server, the server will need to be rebooted for the Security Update to be applied fully

6.      Repeat Steps 2-5 at all your other Community Connect 3 domain controllers and member servers (including DAMMS and MIS servers).

Note: After installation at a server, the server will need to be rebooted for the Security Update to be applied fully.

7.      When all Community Connect 3 servers have had the Security Update applied, log in to a Community Connect 3 workstation as the SystemAdmin user and open the RM Management Console.

8.      In the RM Management Console, expand Workstations, right-click on Main Site and choose to Update Package List. Click Yes to confirm this action. Note: If you have a multi-site network, run this Security Update on every server at all sites and then update the package list once only.

9.   Log in to the first Community Connect 3 domain controller server in each site as the administrator user (not SystemAdmin). Run Windows Explorer and browse to D:\RMNetwork\RMManage\Station Manager. Double-click on the file Healthcheck.exe, and select OK to start the Healthcheck, and OK again when it has completed.

10.   HFXCC3067 provides new packages but does not automatically allocate them. You should allocate all new packages as appropriate to all your workstations at your earliest convenience. Note: If you choose to allocate these packages at a later time, you must still complete all of steps 1-9 above now, including running the Update Package List and the Healthcheck.exe. The simplest way to do this is to allocate them at Main Site level. If you prefer to allocate them at a lower location, ensure that you allocate all relevant packages to all workstations. The new security packages are:

System packages (available by ticking the 'Show RM system packages' box and then selecting 'Available packages')

         Help and Support Center Hotfix 840374 (client)

         HTML Help Security Update KB840315 (client)

         MDAC IE6 ADODB.Stream Object Hotfix KB870669

         Outlook Express Security Update KB823353 (client)

         Task Scheduler Security Update KB841873 (client)

         Windows Shell Security Update KB839645 (client)

11.  Once you have allocated the packages to workstations, restart the workstations for the security update packages to be installed.

Installing after cancelling a previous install

1.      Browse to D:\RMNetwork\RMManage\RM Hotfixes\HFXCC3067_extracted and double-click the file RM Installation Assistant.exe. (If this folder or its contents does not exist, re-run the HFXCC3067.exe file downloaded from the RM Support Web site).

2.      Follow the procedures in 'How to install the Security Update' from step 4 above.

Important - Interaction with RM Service Releases

The components of HFXCC3067 will be included in a future Community Connect 3 Service Release or Microsoft Service Packs validated by RM.

The Security Update can be installed on to networks running Community Connect 3 with Service Release 3 or above.

HFXCC3067 is not included in RM Service Release 4 or Service Release 5. If you still have Community Connect 3 workstations running Windows XP Service Pack 1 and install Service Release 5, you should re-apply HFXCC3067. Please refer to TEC599179 in the Other Useful Articles section.

Additional Information

If you upgrade to Service Release 4 after installing HFXCC3067, the changes made by the Security Update to the workstation rebuild process will have been overwritten. This means that future workstation rebuilds will install some unnecessary software updates and appear to 'hang' during the Windows XP installation at 12 minutes to go for over half an hour. HFXCC3067 updates this part of the workstation rebuild process to deliver fewer, essential software updates and to ensure these updates are the most up-to-date.

To restore the changes made by HFXCC3067, perform the following steps to upgrade the workstation build area:

1.      Log on to your first Community Connect 3 domain controller as an Administrator.

2.      In Windows Explorer, browse to D:\RMNetwork\Server\Utilities\UpdateBuildArea\v1.9.0.0.

3.      Double-click the file UpdateBuildArea.vbs.

4.  Repeat steps 1-3 at all other domain controllers used to build workstations - if you are not sure, run this script on every Community Connect 3 domain controller.

Future Community Connect 3 workstation builds will now install the latest list of critical security updates during the operating system install.
