Security Update for Microsoft Internet Explorer security update [HFXCC3073]
Published Date : 02 Sep 2004 Last Updated : 13 Feb 2020 Content Ref: DWN277834

Description

**Please note this only applies to Community Connect 3 and RM Smart-Tools 3 networks**

Before installing any software update, please refer to TEC90813 and DWN59018 in the Other Useful Articles section below. These articles detail RM's recommendations regarding software update installation and support.

Any references to Community Connect 3 in this document apply equally to RM Smart-Tools 3.

Important: You may install this Security Update on Service Release 3 or above.
If you have not yet installed Service Release 4 then you must install HFXCC3064 before installing HFXCC3073.

Issue
Microsoft has released a significant security update for Microsoft Internet Explorer.  HFXCC3073 contains this security update in a format easily applied to Community Connect 3 networks.

Solution

We recommend that you apply this Security Update as soon as possible and advise reading the following Important Notes before you start the process.

During the installation of HFXCC3073 the Update Package List procedure, RM Station Manager HealthCheck and the allocation of a new Microsoft security update package must be done MANUALLY.  Please ensure that you fully complete ALL steps in the How to install the Security Update section of this article.

This Security Update should be installed on to all Community Connect 3 servers. Servers and workstations will need to be restarted for the Security Update to be applied fully.

HFXCC3073 requires at least Service Release 3 to have been applied to the network. HFXCC3073 is not included in RM Service Release 4 or Service Release 5.

All servers will need to be restarted in order to install this Security Update completely. You should therefore plan to install the Security Update out-of-hours to minimise disruption to your network.

What will the Security Update change?

HFXCC3073 contains the following Microsoft security update:

  • 1. MS04-025: Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (867801) - for Community Connect 3 servers and workstations

NOTE: The security update provided in HFXCC3073 differs depending upon the operating system on which it is being installed. HFXCC3073 will determine the operating system and install the correct update. For Windows Server 2003, the update is WindowsServer2003-KB867801-x86-enu.exe. For Windows 2000 Server and Windows XP Professional, the update is IE6.0sp1-KB871260-x86-ENU.exe.

More information on the issues resolved by this Microsoft security update is available from Microsoft's website (http://www.microsoft.com).

In addition, HFXCC3073 will remove a superseded Community Connect 3 workstation package if it is present on your network. This package is called 'IE6 SP1 Hotfix KB832894 (client)' and is superseded by a new package called 'IE6 SP1 Security Update KB871260 (client)'.

After HFXCC3073 has been installed, the superseded package 'IE6 SP1 Hotfix KB832894 (client)' will show a status of Uninstall_Failed on updated stations. This is expected behaviour.

Who should install this Security Update?

You should apply this Security Update without delay if you are running a Community Connect 3 network.

HFXCC3073 should be applied to all Community Connect 3 servers, i.e. all domain controllers and all member servers (e.g. DAMMS servers, MIS servers).  It does not need to be applied to Community Connect 3 workstations directly. It can be applied to Community Connect 3 servers running Windows 2000 Server or Windows Server 2003.

NOTE: You must have already installed at least Service Release 3 before installing HFXCC3073.If you have not yet installed Service Release 4 then you must install HFXCC3064 before installing HFXCC3073.

Reminder: All servers will need to be rebooted in order to install this Security Update completely. You should therefore plan to install the Security Update out-of-hours to minimise disruption to your network.

Installation Instructions

How to install the Security Update

If you previously started to install the Security Update but cancelled the operation, follow the installation instructions in the 'Installing after cancelling a previous install' section below.

  1. Download HFXCC3073.exe
  2. Log on to your first Community Connect 3 domain controller as Administrator (not SystemAdmin) and copy the Security Update to a temporary location (e.g. D:\temp).
  3. Run the Security Update by double-clicking the self-extracting executable file (HFXCC3073.exe). The Security Update will extract files automatically and run the RM Installation Assistant to begin the installation.
  4. When prompted, click Continue.
  5. The installation will proceed automatically. When prompted that the RM Installation Assistant has finished, click Finish.

NOTE: After installation at a server, the server will need to be rebooted for the Security Update to be applied fully.

  1. Repeat Steps 2-5 at all your other Community Connect 3 domain controllers and member servers (including DAMMS and MIS servers).

NOTE: After installation at a server, the server will need to be rebooted for the Security Update to be applied fully.

  1. When all Community Connect 3 servers have had the Security Update applied, open the RM Management Console at a domain controller or a workstation.
  2. In the RM Management Console, expand Workstations, right-click on Main Site and choose to Update Package List. Click Yes to confirm this action.

NOTE: If you have a multi-site network, run this Security Update on every server at all sites and then update the package list once only.

  1. Log in to the first Community Connect 3 domain controller server in each site as the administrator user (not SystemAdmin). Run Windows Explorer and browse to D:\RMNetwork\RMManage\Station Manager. Double-click on the file Healthcheck.exe, and select OK to start the Healthcheck, and OK again when it has completed.
  2. HFXCC3073 provides a new package but does not automatically allocate it. You should allocate the new package as appropriate to all your workstations at your earliest convenience.

NOTE: If you choose to allocate the package at a later time, you must still complete all of steps 1-9 above now, including running the Update Package List and the Healthcheck.exe.

The simplest way to do this is to allocate the package at Main Site level. If you prefer to allocate it at a lower location, ensure that you allocate it to all workstations. The new security package is IE6 SP1 Security Update KB871260 (client) and is available by ticking the 'Show RM system packages' box and then selecting 'Available packages'

  1. Once you have allocated this package, restart the workstations for the Microsoft security update to be installed.

Installing after cancelling a previous install
  1. Browse to D:\RMNetwork\RMManage\RM Hotfixes\HFXCC3073_extracted and double-click the file RM Installation Assistant.exe. (If this folder or its contents does not exist, re-run the HFXCC3073.exe file downloaded from the RM Support website).
  2. Follow the procedures in 'How to install the Security Update' from step 4 above.

IMPORTANT - Interaction with RM Service Releases

The components of HFXCC3073 will be included in a future Community Connect 3 Service Release or Microsoft Service Pack validated by RM.

The Security Update can be installed on to networks running Community Connect 3 with Service Release 3 or above.

HFXCC3073 is not included in RM Service Release 4 or Service Release 5. If you install HFXCC3073 on to a Community Connect 3 network running SR3 and then upgrade to SR4, it is recommended that you re-install HFXCC3073 as this will remove the obsolete workstation package contained in SR4 and superseded by this Security Update, but this re-install is not critical - there will be no loss of functionality or security by not re-installing HFXCC3073. To re-install HFXCC3073 follow the instructions from Step 1 of the section 'Installing after cancelling a previous install'
