Critical Update to stop workstations halting at the login screen if CD ROM Player is de-allocated or upgraded [HFXCC3078]

Before installing any software update, please refer to TEC90813 and DWN59018 in the Other Useful Articles section below. These articles detail RM's recommendations regarding software update installation and support.

Any references to Community Connect 3 in this document apply equally to RM Smart-Tools 3.

This Critical Update applies to networks running Community Connect 3 Service Release 4.

If your network has Community Connect 3 Service Release 4 (SR4) installed then it is recommended that you install this Critical Update.

HFXCC3078 is included in Service Release 5.


Issue

If CD ROM Player is de-allocated from a Community Connect 3 workstation, the computer may stop functioning correctly. Re-allocating the CD ROM Player package will fail. The problem may be apparent if the workstation stops at a Microsoft� Windows� XP login screen (and not the Community Connect 3 login screen).

This Critical Update repairs a problem with the CD ROM Player package version 4.41.0.0 which, on deinstallation, removes some necessary registry keys from the workstation.  The Critical Update prevents version 4.41.0.0 from uninstalling from the workstation, then removes it cleanly, and finally installs the later version 4.42.0.0 to correct the problem.

Note: CD ROM Player v4.41.0.0 is shipped with Service Release 4.


Solution
It is recommended that you apply this Critical Update if you have installed Community Connect 3 Service Release 4 (SR4). It is essential that all domain controllers are on at the time when this Critical Update is run and that all have been correctly upgraded to SR4. Specifically, the Critical Update will look for the directory 'Tools\CD ROM Player\v4.41.0.0' in the RMPackages share on each domain controller.

What will this Critical Update change?
HFXCC3078 will update CD ROM Player to version 4.42.0.0. The Critical Update contains two other components, CDR441FullFix and CDROM Player Repair. The former runs as part of the Critical Update installation and the latter is a required new workstation component.

Who should install this Critical Update?

You should apply this Critical Update if you have installed SR4.

HFXCC3078 should be applied to the first Community Connect 3 domain controllers in each site on your network. All domain controllers must be on before you run this Critical Update.  You do not need to restart any servers but will need to restart workstations to update them with the new workstation package.

Note: HFXCC3078 is included in Service Release 5 for Community Connect 3; if you have installed Service Release 5 on your network you do not need to install HFXCC3078 separately.

  1. Click the HFXCC3078.exe file link to download the Critical Update.
  2. Choose to Save the file, browse to the temporary location you wish to save it to (e.g. D:\temp) and click Save.
  3. When it has downloaded, follow the installation instructions below to install the Critical Update.

Installation Instructions

How to install the Critical Update
Note: If you previously started to install the Critical Update but cancelled the operation, follow the installation instructions in the 'Installing after cancelling a previous install' section below.

  1. Download HFXCC3078.
  2. Log on to your first ('Forest Root') Community Connect 3 domain controller as Administrator (not SystemAdmin) and copy the Critical Update to a temporary location (e.g. D:\temp).
  3. Run the Critical Update by double-clicking the self-extracting executable file HFXCC3078.exe. The Critical Update will extract files automatically and run the RM Installation Assistant to begin the installation.
  4. When prompted, click Continue.
  5. At the 'Critical Patch - HFXCC3078' window, click OK
  6. The installation will proceed automatically. A blank command prompt window will remain on-screen while the Critical Update installs.
  7. At the second 'Critical Patch - HFXCC3078' window, check that the message displayed is 'Fix completed with no errors detected'. If not, make a note of the message and contact RM Support. Click OK in either case.
  8. When prompted that the RM Installation Assistant has finished, click Finish.
  9. Restart workstations for the updated version of CD ROM Player to be installed.

Important: If your Community Connect 3/RM Smart-Tools 3 network is configured across multiple Active Directory sites you must now follow TEC401473 which is available from the 'Other Useful Articles' section below.


Installing after cancelling a previous install
  1. For the Critical Update to work, the folder under D:\RMNetwork\RMManage\Packages\Tool\CD ROM Player must be named v4.41.0.0. If any domain controller has already been updated to v4.42.0.0, you must rename this folder to v4.41.0.0 before re-running the Critical Update.
  2. Browse to D:\RMNetwork\RMManage\RM Hotfixes\HFXCC3078_extracted and double-click the file RM Installation Assistant.exe. (If this folder or its contents does not exist, re-run the HFXCC3078.exe file downloaded from the RM Support web site.)
  3. The RM Installation Assistant will initialise; click Continue to proceed with the installation.
  4. Follow the procedures in 'How to install the Critical Update' from step 5 above.

Important - Interaction with RM Service Releases

HFXCC3078 can be installed on networks running Community Connect 3 Service Release 4.

This Critical Update is included in Service Release 5.
