Critical Update to resolve RM Server Backup issues on Community Connect 3 Service Release 4 (SR4) networks [HFXCC3081]
Published Date : 27 Oct 2004 Last Updated : 13 Feb 2020 Content Ref: DWN292215

Description

Before installing any software update, please refer to TEC90813 and DWN59018 in Other Useful Articles below. These articles detail RM's recommendations regarding software update installation and support.

Any references to Community Connect™ 3 in this document apply equally to RM Smart-Tools 3.

This Critical Update applies to networks running Community Connect 3 Service Release 4.

HFXCC3081 is included in Service Release 5 for Community Connect 3; if you have installed Service Release 5 on your network you do not need to install HFXCC3081 separately.

Issue

This Critical Update is designed to address several issues relating to tape backup on Community Connect 3 servers:

  1. After installing Service Release 4 (SR4) scheduled backups no longer work correctly on Microsoft Windows 2000 Member servers.
This occurs as after installing SR4 the scheduled task is set to run as a user '<domain name>\<server name> Backup' instead of a local user '<server name>\<server name> Backup'
  2. Some Community Connect 3 servers running Microsoft Windows Server 2003 may have the following problems relating to RM Server Backup:
    • There is no shortcut to RM Server Backup within Start, All Programs. It has to be launched by browsing to D:\RMNetwork\RMManage\Server Backup\Server Backup.exe.
    • When attempting to check Enable Scheduled Backups, an error message appears: "There is a problem creating the RM Server Backup schedule RetVal=1". When this error is acknowledged the scheduled backup job created does not run. In addition, the scheduled task created is set to Logon As Administrator, not the Backup user.
  3. On Community Connect 3 servers running Microsoft Windows Server 2003, RM Server Backup scheduled jobs fail to run when trying to use a tape which is located in the Free Media Pool. The same job will, however, run successfully if the Removable Storage service is manually started before the scheduled job begins.

After a tape has successfully been used it will be located in the Backup Media Pool and subsequent Scheduled backups to the tape will work successfully without having to manually start the Removable Storage service.

When a scheduled job fails the following Application event is logged:
Event ID 8017 - NTBackup error: "The requested media failed to mount. The operation was aborted."

Please note: While HFXCC3081 has been designed to resolve all these issues, some combinations of hardware may still encounter issue 3 described above. If you apply HFXCC3081 and find that any Community Connect 3 server running Microsoft Windows Server 2003 is still displaying problem 3 then please read the Additional Information section below.

Important - Interaction with RM Service Releases

The Critical Update can be installed on to networks running Community Connect 3 with Service Release 4.

HFXCC3081 is included in Service Release 5.

Additional Information

Important: After installing this Critical Update you may occasionally still see an issue when using RM Server Backup on servers running Microsoft Windows Server 2003.

The symptom of this issue is that the first manual or scheduled backup may still fail to run on a tape located in the Free Media Pool.

If the failed job was a scheduled backup then the following error may be logged.

  • The requested media failed to mount. The operation was aborted.

If the failed job was a manual backup then the following error may be displayed.

  • Mount Waiting - The library is unable to load the media at this time because the drive is in use.

If the first backup to any tape located in the Free Media Pool (e.g new tapes) fails then ensure that another manual or scheduled backup is attempted using the same tape. When this does complete successfully the tape should then automatically be located in the Backup Media Pool, and all subsequent backups using the tape should work successfully.

NoteThere has only been a small number of reports where this issue has persisted on Microsoft Windows Server 2003 servers after the installation of HFXCC3081. RM has provided Microsoft with information and investigation by Microsoft is on-going. The issue may be addressed in a future Microsoft update for Microsoft Windows Server 2003.

Even if all your servers are performing backups correctly, and/or you use an alternative backup solution (e.g. VERITAS Backup Exec™), as always, it is good practice to check that a successful backup is being performed daily. Please refer to Other Useful Articles on 'How to make and check a full manual backup' for information on how to check backups have worked correctly and how to perform manual backups if required.
