Critical Update to correct an issue where some users cannot always access the Internet [HFXCC3088]
Published Date : 28 Oct 2004 Last Updated : 13 Feb 2020 Content Ref: DWN301091

Description

**Please note this applies to Community Connect 3™ and RM Smart-Tools 3 networks**

Before installing any software update, please refer to TEC90813 and DWN59018 in the Other Useful Articles section below. These articles detail RM's recommendations regarding software update installation and support.

Any references to Community Connect 3 in this document apply equally to RM Smart-Tools 3.

HFXCC3088 is not included in Service Release 5 for Community Connect 3; if you have installed Service Release 5 on your network you should re-apply HFXCC3088 separately.

Issue

Users on a Community Connect 3 network try to access an Internet site but receive an error:

"The page cannot be displayed - Cannot find Server or DNS error".

The problem may be seen on networks running Service Release 3 or Service Release 4. The proxy settings within the Internet and Email GPO are correct and Group Policy Objects are being applied successfully yet the problem remains.

Different types of users can be affected. If a user logs on to a workstation and experiences the problem, then immediately logs off and back on again, Internet access may then be successful.

Solution

Apply this Critical Update if you have Community Connect 3 users unable to access the Internet as described above.

Note: The Critical Update can be installed on to Community Connect 3 networks running Service Release 3, 4 or 5.

This Critical Update should be installed on the first Community Connect 3 domain controller in each site. Servers and workstations will not need to be restarted after applying this Critical Update, but users will need to log off workstations and back on to pick up the change.

What will this Critical Update change?

HFXCC3088 will check for Microsoft Internet Explorer and proxy server-related GPO settings that appear outside the required RM Group Policy Object settings and remove any rogue settings that conflict with those configured within the Internet and Email GPO. Please see the 'Additional Information' section below for further details.

Who should install this Critical Update?

You should apply this Critical Update if you are running Service Release 3, 4 or 5 and you have users experiencing the Internet access problem described above, or you have made changes to the Internet settings against the recommendation described in the 'Additional Information' section.

HFXCC3088 should be applied to the first Community Connect 3 domain controller in each site only. It does not need to be applied to any other servers or workstations and no servers or workstations will need to be restarted.

Download Instructions

1.      Click the HFXCC3088.exe file link to download the Critical Update.

2.      Choose to Save the file, browse to the temporary location you wish to save it to (e.g. D:\temp) and click Save.

Installation Instructions

How to install the Critical Update

(Note: If you previously started to install the Critical Update but cancelled the operation, follow the installation instructions in the 'Installing after cancelling a previous install' section below)

1.      Download HFXCC3088.

2.      Log on to your first Community Connect 3 domain controller as Administrator (not SystemAdmin) and copy the Critical Update to a temporary location (e.g. D:\temp).

3.      Run the Critical Update by double-clicking the self-extracting executable file (HFXCC3088.exe).  The Critical Update will extract files automatically and run the RM Installation Assistant to begin the installation.

4.      When prompted, click Continue.

5.      The installation will proceed automatically.  When prompted that the RM Installation Assistant has finished, click Finish.

6.  Users will need to log off workstations and back on to pick up the change.

Installing after cancelling a previous install

1.      Browse to D:\RMNetwork\RMManage\RM Hotfixes\HFXCC3088_extracted and double-click the file RM Installation Assistant.exe. (If this folder or its contents does not exist, re-run the HFXCC3088.exe file downloaded from the RM Support website.)

2.      Follow the procedures in 'How to install the Critical Update' from step 4 above.

Important - Interaction with RM Service Releases

The Critical Update can be installed on to networks running Community Connect 3 with Service Release 3, 4 or 5.

HFXCC3088 is not included in Service Release 5. If you install Service Release 5 after HFXCC3088, it is recommended that you re-apply HFXCC3088 to ensure the changes this Critical Update makes to your network are retained.

Additional Information

The Critical Update checks for instances of the IEAK folders in all policies on the system.

It then deletes these and any contained .INS files (the root cause of the problem).

It then searches in the GPCUserExtensionNames attribute for the [{A2E30F80-D7DE-11D2-BBDE-00C04F86AE3B}{FC715823-C5FB-11D1-9EEF-00A0C90347FF}] value.  If found, it will delete it (this action removes the GUID references for the Microsoft Internet INS files in the AD).  Finally, if this is the only value for the attribute, it sets the attribute to <value not set>.

Recommendation

To avoid this problem recurring in future, it is recommended that you do not configure any settings within the following area of any Group Policy Object:

  • User Configuration\Windows Settings\Internet Explorer Maintenance.

Doing so can cause unreliable delivery of the Internet settings on a Community Connect 3 network. Internet settings should only be configured within the following area of the Internet and Email GPO

  • User Configuration\Administrative Templates\Research Machines.

If you are experiencing the problem described in the 'Issue' section above, or have deliberately made changes in the User Configuration\Windows Settings\Internet Explorer Maintenance area of any GPO then you should apply or re-apply this Critical Update.

Re-applying HFXCC3088

If you install HFXCC3088 and then subsequently make changes to the Internet settings against the recommendations detailed in the 'Additional Information' section, then HFXCC3088 should be re-applied. This can be done by following the instructions in the 'Installing after cancelling a previous install' section.

HFXCC3088 is included in RM Service Release 6.
