Update to prevent workstation hard drives filling up with TmpTOC files post Service Release 4 [HFXCC3075]
Published Date : 04 Nov 2004 Last Updated : 13 Feb 2020 Content Ref: DWN303077

Description

**Please note this only applies to Community Connect 3™ and RM Smart-Tools 3 networks**

Before installing any Software Update, please refer TEC90813 and DWN59018 in the 'Other Useful Articles' section below. These articles detail RM's recommendations regarding Software Update installation and support.

Any references to Community Connect 3 in this document apply equally to RM Smart-Tools 3.

This update applies to networks running Community Connect 3 Service Release 4. HFXCC3075 is included in Service Release 5 for Community Connect 3; if you have installed Service Release 5 on your network you do not need to install HFXCC3075 separately.

Issue

Community Connect 3 workstations' hard drives may be found to contain large TmpTOC.html files of several GB in size. If present, these files will be located in C:\Program Files\Research Machines\Network Management\Logfiles.

The problem is caused by an issue with a small RM system component called InstApp and only arises once a workstation has rebooted 100 times. Any workstations that have been rebuilt after installing Service Release 4 (SR4) will not experience the problem of InstApp creating large TmpTOC.html files.

Solution

Apply this Update if you are experiencing the problem noted above. The Update can be installed on to Community Connect 3 networks running Service Release 4. It is included in Service Release 5.

Important: During the installation of HFXCC3075, the Update Package List procedure and allocation of a new package must be done manually. Please ensure that you complete ALL steps in the 'How to install the Update' section of this article.

This update should be installed on all Community Connect 3 domain controllers. Servers will not need to be restarted after applying this update but workstations will need to be restarted to update them with the new package.

It is recommended that you also apply HFXCC3072 if you have not done so already as this update silently corrects the same problem with another small component, ListPkg, which would otherwise exhibit the same problem as InstApp. The ListPkg component may create large TmpTOC.html files on any updated or rebuilt SR4 workstations until HFXCC3072 is applied.

Installing HFXCC3075 and HFXCC3072 will prevent future creation of large TmpTOC.html files, however if these files already exist on workstations then they are not automatically removed. If large TmpTOC.html files exist they can be manually deleted, or will be removed the next time the workstation is rebuilt.

HFXCC3072 and HFXCC3075 are both included in Service Release 5.

What will this update change?
HFXCC3075 will deliver a new RM System Tool package, RM InstApp Hotfix 75, which itself delivers a new version of InstApp.exe to C:\RM\INSTALL to correct the problem discussed above.

Who should install this Update?

You should apply this update if you are running Service Release 4 and are experiencing the problem noted above.

HFXCC3075 should be applied to all Community Connect 3 domain controllers. It does not need to be applied to any other servers or workstations, but workstations will need to be restarted to correct the problem addressed by this update.

NOTE: You must have already installed at least Service Release 4 before installing HFXCC3075.

Installation Instructions

How to install the update

Please note that if you previously started to install the update but cancelled the operation, follow the installation instructions in the 'Installing after cancelling a previous install' section below.

  1.  Download HFXCC3075.
  2.  Log on to your first Community Connect 3 domain controller as Administrator (not SystemAdmin) and copy the Update to a temporary location (e.g. D:\temp).
  3.  Run the update by double-clicking the self-extracting executable file (HFXCC3075.exe).  The Update will extract files automatically and run the RM Installation Assistant to begin the installation.
  4.  When prompted, click Continue.
  5. The installation will proceed automatically.  When prompted that the RM Installation Assistant has finished, click Finish.
  6.  Repeat steps 2-5 at all your other Community Connect 3 domain controllers.
  7.  When all Community Connect 3 domain controllers have had the Update applied, open the RM Management Console at a domain controller or a workstation.
  8.  In the RM Management Console, expand Workstations, right-click on Main Site and choose to Update Package List. Click Yes to confirm this action.

NOTE: If you have a multi-site network, run this update on every server in all sites and then update the package list once only for each site.

9.      Allocate the new RM System Tools package (RM InstApp Hotfix 75) to all your workstations. You can choose to do this one location at a time, but it may be easier to allocate at Main Site level so you ensure all workstations receive the new package.

10.  Restart your Community Connect 3 workstations at your convenience to update them with the new Update package.

Installing after cancelling a previous installation
  1. Browse to D:\RMNetwork\RMManage\RM Hotfixes\HFXCC3075_extracted and double-click the file RM Installation Assistant.exe. (If this folder or its contents do not exist, re-run the HFXCC3075.exe file downloaded from the RM Support website).
  2. Follow the procedures in 'How to install the Update from step 4 above.

IMPORTANT - Interaction with RM Service Releases

The update can be installed on to networks running Community Connect 3 with Service Release 4.

HFXCC3075 is included in Service Release 5.
