Update to restore Internet access and to disable the WebClient service on Community Connect 3 workstations [HFXCC3102]
Published Date : 03 Feb 2005 Last Updated : 13 Feb 2020 Content Ref: DWN344892

Description

**Please note this only applies to Community Connect 3™ and RM Smart-Tools 3 networks**

Before installing any software update, please refer to TEC90813 and DWN59018 in the Other Useful Articles section below. These articles detail RM's recommendations regarding software update installation and support.

Any references to Community Connect 3 in this document apply equally to RM Smart-Tools 3.

HFXCC3102 is included in Service Release 5 for Community Connect 3; if you have installed Service Release 5 on your network you do not need to install HFXCC3102 separately.

Platforms

The Update can be installed on to Community Connect 3 networks running Service Release 4.

Symptoms

1. No Internet access after rebuilding workstations as Microsoft Windows XP SP2
After installing the MicrosoftWindows XP Service Pack 2 Update Pack (Windows XP SP2), users logging on to workstations rebuilt as Microsoft Windows XP SP2 cannot access the network because the proxy server setting is incorrect.

2. Workstation log on times of 20 minutes or more
This may only become apparent if you add an additional domain controller into your network and the affected users' home directories are located on the new server.

Note: This second issue is specific to a Microsoft Windows service and differs from issues being addressed by several performance improvement updates for Community Connect 3 networks.

Requirements

  • HFXCC3102 should be applied to the first Community Connect 3 domain controller in each site only.
  • It does not need to be applied to any other servers or workstations and no servers will need to be restarted.
  • Workstations must be restarted twice in order for the change made by the Update to take effect.

Download Instructions

  1. Click the HFXCC3102.exe file link to download the Update.
  2. Choose to Save the file, browse to the temporary location you wish to save it to (eg D:\temp) and click Save.
  3. When it has downloaded, follow the installation instructions below to install the Update.

Installation Instructions

How to install the Update

Note: If you previously started to install the Update but cancelled the operation, follow the installation instructions in the 'Installing after cancelling a previous install' section below:

    1. Download HFXCC3102.
    2. Log on to your first Community Connect 3 domain controller as an Administrator (not SystemAdmin)and copy the update to a temporary location (eg D:\temp).
    3. Run the Update by double-clicking the self-extracting executable file (HFXCC3102.exe). The Update will extract files automatically and run the RM Installation Assistant to begin the installation.
    4. When prompted, click Continue.
    5. The installation will proceed automatically.  When prompted that the RM Installation Assistant has finished, click Finish.
    6. Restart workstations twice at your convenience for the Update to be fully applied to the network.

Installing after cancelling a previous install
  1. Browse to D:\RMNetwork\RMManage\RM Hotfixes\HFXCC3102_extracted and double-click the file RM Installation Assistant.exe. (If this folder or its contents does not exist, re-run the HFXCC3102.exe file downloaded from the RM Support Web site.)
  2.  Follow the procedures in 'How to install the Update' from step 4 above.

Important - Interaction with RM Service Releases
  • The Update can be installed on to networks running Community Connect 3 with Service Release 4.
  • HFXCC3102 is not included in Service Release 4 or the Microsoft Windows XP SP2 Update Pack. It will need to be reinstalled if the Microsoft Windows XP SP2 Update Pack is applied to a Community Connect 3 network after applying this software update.
  • HFXCC3102 is included in Service Release 5.

More Information

HFXCC3102 will disable the WebClient service on all workstations in the domain. This is an obsolete service that can cause delays in logons and in attaching to a UNC path (eg \\myserver\sharename). See the Microsoft Knowledge Base article KB832161 for more details.

The service is disabled via the "System Wide Computer Settings" group policy object, setting the following registry value on workstations:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\WebClient] "Start"=dword:00000004
