Update to allow other users to continue to log on to workstations configured for privileged users [HFXCC3136]
Published Date : 06 Oct 2005 Last Updated : 13 Feb 2020 Content Ref: DWN495847

Description

Please note this only applies to Community Connect 3™ and RM Smart-Tools 3 networks

Note: Any references to Community Connect 3 in this document apply equally to RM Smart-Tools 3.

Before installing any software update, please refer to TEC90813 and DWN59018 on the RM Support Web site (see Other Useful Articles below). These articles detail RM's recommendations regarding software update installation and support.

HFXCC3136 fully supersedes HFXCC3122 and HFXCC3132.

Note: HFXCC3136 is now superseded by Service Release 6

Platforms

Community Connect 3 networks with Service Release 4 and above.

Symptoms

After installing HFXCC3122 or HFXCC3132 (both are updates to RM Logon Provider), workstations configured with privileged users and that have the 'Prevent other users from logging on' box ticked, prevent all other users from logging on. Users see error 'SAS window winlogon.exe application error'. This issue affects all users including system administrators and is a change in behaviour affecting workstations using the RM Logon Provider version 1.60.0.0 and above.

Cause

The issue is caused by the way the RM Logon Provider component has been created for Software Updates HFXCC3122 and HFXCC3132; please see the More Information section below for further details. HFXCC3136 will update the RM Logon Provider and another component, RM IDChecker, in order to resolve this issue.

Requirements

We recommend that you apply this update. The update can be applied to any Community Connect 3 network running Service Release 4 or above.

Impact on your network
  • This update should be installed on all Community Connect 3 domain controllers (beginning with the Forest Root).
  • Servers will not need to be restarted after applying this update.
  • New versions of RM Logon Provider and RM IDChecker will then be installed on workstations when they next reboot.

Download Instructions

  1. Log on to your Forest Root domain controller as Administrator (not as a system administrator).
  2. Click the floppy disk icon below to download the file.
  3. Choose to Save the file, browse to the temporary location you wish to save it to (eg Desktop or D:\Temp) and click Save.
  4. When the file has downloaded, follow the installation instructions below to install the update.

Installation Instructions

How to install the update

Note: If you previously started to install the update but cancelled the operation, follow the installation instructions in the 'Installing after cancelling a previous install' section below:

  1. Download HFXCC3136 (as described above).
  2. At the Forest Root domain controller, log on as an Administrator (not as a system administrator). Copy the update to a temporary location (eg D:\temp).
  3. Run the update by double-clicking the self-extracting executable file (HFXCC3136.exe). The update will extract files automatically and run the RM Installation Assistant to begin the installation.
  4. When prompted, click Continue.
  5. The installation will proceed automatically. When prompted that the RM Installation Assistant has finished, click Finish.
  6. Repeat steps 2 to 5 for each additional Community Connect 3 domain controller.
  7. When next restarted whilst connected to the network, workstations will update their versions of the RM Logon Provider and RM IDChecker. During this process they will restart again automatically; we therefore recommend that you wait two minutes once the Community Connect 3 logon screen is presented before logging on to an updated workstation.

Installing after cancelling a previous install

  1. Browse to D:\RMNetwork\RMManage\RM Hotfixes\HFXCC3136_extracted and double-click the file RM Installation Assistant.exe (if this folder or its contents does not exist, re-run the HFXCC3136.exe file downloaded from the RM Support Web site).
  2. Follow the procedures in 'How to install the Update' from step 4 above.

Important - Interaction with RM Service Releases
  • The components of HFXCC3136 are included in RM Service Release 6 for Community Connect 3.
  • The update can be installed onto networks running Community Connect 3 with Service Release 4 or above.

More Information

Two issues have been identified which contribute to the issue described above. Firstly, in a connected mode of use, if the user is in the RM KeepList, all is fine. If they are a system administrator but not in the KeepList, logon is rejected. This situation is resolved with the update to RM IDChecker. Secondly, in a disconnected mode of use, on a privileged user workstation, local logons are not allowed. No user is allowed to log on apart from the designated privileged user (even system administrators). This situation is resolved with the update to RM Logon Provider.

Note: Previous versions of RM IDChecker operated in two ways; Connected used a Microsoft API call, Disconnected used a token. The new version uses the token approach for both modes of use.

In addition, the change to RM IDChecker allows a privileged user to log on by typing their username in upper or lower case (previous versions would require the username to be entered in the case in which it was created).

What will this update change?
  • HFXCC3136 will update RM Logon Provider to version 1.63.0.0.
  • HFXCC3136 will also update RM IDChecker to version 1.6.0.0.
