Update to RM Printer Credits Framework [HFXCC3141]
Published Date : 13 Dec 2005 Last Updated : 13 Feb 2020 Content Ref: DWN539433

Description

**Please note this only applies to Community Connect 3™ and RM Smart-Tools 3 networks**

Note: Any references to Community Connect 3 in this document apply equally to RM Smart-Tools 3.

Before installing any software update, please refer to TEC90813 and DWN59018 on the RM Support website (see 'Other Useful Articles' below). These articles detail RM's recommendations regarding software update installation and support.

Platforms

Community Connect 3 networks with Service Release 4 or above.

Symptoms

RM Printer Credits works by opening TCP connections from requesting Community Connect 3 workstations to the RMAudPrnCredits service on the forest root server. Once a Printer Credits operation is completed the TCP connection is not closed correctly, resulting in the server suffering a growing number of open connections with time. Eventually the number of open connections prevents other server operations from performing optimally, and server and network performance degrades.

Symptoms of this problem can include:

  • Loss of connectivity to servers
  • Replication failures between domain controllers
  • DNS servicing failures
  • Backup Exec Remote agents not being able to connect to the media server, resulting in failed backup jobs
  • LDAP request failures
  • Intermittent server reboots

Cause

HFXCC3141 corrects the problems described above by updating the RM Printer Credits Framework to ensure opened TCP connections to the forest root server are closed correctly.

Requirements

You should apply this Update if you are using Printer Credits and are affected by any of the problems noted above. The Update can be applied to any Community Connect 3 network with Service Release 4 or above.

Impact on your network
  • This Update should be installed on all Community Connect 3 domain controllers (beginning with the Forest Root).
  • Servers and workstations will need to be restarted after applying this Update. It is therefore recommended that it is installed during a period of planned network downtime.

Download Instructions

  1. Log on to your first Community Connect 3 domain controller as Administrator (not SystemAdmin).
  2. Click the HFXCC3141.exe file link below to download the Update.
  3. Choose to Save the file, browse to the temporary location you wish to save it to (e.g. 'Desktop' or D:\Temp) and click Save.
  4. When the file has downloaded, follow the installation instructions below to install the Update.

  1. Download HFXCC3141.
  2. Log on to your first Community Connect 3 domain controller as Administrator (not SystemAdmin) and copy the Update to a temporary location (e.g. D:\temp).
  3. Run the Update by double-clicking the self-extracting executable file (HFXCC3141.exe).
The Update will extract files automatically and run the RM Installation Assistant to begin the installation.
  4. When prompted, click Continue.
  5. The installation will proceed automatically. When prompted that the RM Installation Assistant has finished, click Finish.  The server will now need to be restarted to complete the installation.
  6. Repeat steps 2 to 5 for each additional Community Connect 3 domain controller.
  7. Restart all Community Connect 3 workstations to complete the Update installation across the network.

Installing after cancelling a previous install

  1. Browse to D:\RMNetwork\RMManage\RM Hotfixes\HFXCC3141_extracted and double-click the file RM Installation Assistant.exe (if this folder or its contents does not exist, re-run the HFXCC3141.exe file downloaded from the RM Support website).
  2. Follow the procedures in 'How to install the Update' from step 4 above.

Important - Interaction with RM Service Releases
