Windows Script Host Update [HFXCC3143]
Published Date : 14 Dec 2005 Last Updated : 13 Feb 2020 Content Ref: DWN547637

Description

Note: Any references to Community Connect 3 in this document apply equally to RM Smart-Tools 3.

Before installing any Software Update, please refer to TEC90813 and DWN59018 on the RM Support website (see 'Other Useful Articles' below). These articles detail RM's recommendations regarding Software Update installation and support.

Platforms

Community Connect 3 networks with Service Release 4 or above.

Symptoms

RM workstations shipped before May 2005 that have not been rebuilt from a Community Connect 3 server may have CScript enabled as their default script host. Most users e.g. Students and Teaching Staff cannot access CScript.exe so any scripts the station needs to run (such as logoff scripts) will fail.

The RM Synchronise logoff script is one such script that will fail to run when the user logs off, causing synchronisation to fail.

Cause

HFXCC3143 corrects the problem described above by setting the default script host to WScript, which can be accessed by all users. As a result, all necessary scripts are able to run.

This issue can also be permanently resolved by rebuilding each affected station from a Community Connect 3 server.

Requirements

You should apply this update if you are affected by any of the problems noted above. The update can be applied to any Community Connect 3 network with Service Release 4 or above.

Impact on your network
  • This Update should be installed on all Community Connect 3 domain controllers (beginning with the Forest Root).
  • No servers will need to be restarted as part of the installation process.
  • A new workstation package named WSHFix is copied to the packages share on the server. This package needs to be allocated to all workstations.
  • All workstations will need to be restarted after applying this Update.

It is therefore recommended that the Software Update is installed during a period of planned network downtime.
