Summary
Hotfix to resolve a name resolution issue using Microsoft Outlook Express on Microsoft Windows XP SP2.
Description
**Please note this only applies to Community Connect 3™ and RM Smart-Tools 3 networks**
Before installing any software update please refer to TEC90813 and DWN59018 on the RM Support Web site. These articles detail RM's recommendations regarding software update installation and support.
Any references to Community Connect 3 in this document apply equally to RM Smart-Tools 3.
HFXCC3147 is applicable to Community Connect 3 networks with the Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 Update Pack installed.
Platforms
This Hotfix is provided only for customers experiencing the problem described below who require a solution that updates the core RM group policy objects.
The recommended solution to this problem is to use RM Type Manager as described in TEC563859, which is available via the Other Useful Articles section below.
Symptoms
Using Microsoft Outlook Express to send email from Community Connect 3 workstations running Microsoft Windows XP SP2, names are not correctly resolved to their corresponding email addresses. For example, after typing the first few unique letters of a contact's name into the To: field of a Microsoft Outlook Express message, the contact appears to be identified (the full name is found), but when trying to send the message the user receives an error stating that the name could not be found. The user must then select the name from the Display Names dialogue.
This issue only affects resolution of contacts' names in the Microsoft Outlook Express address book on Microsoft Windows XP SP2. Typing the first few unique characters of a contact's email address (as opposed to their name) into the To: field of a message does allow the email to be sent successfully. Furthermore, the problem does not affect Community Connect 3 workstations running Microsoft Windows XP SP1.
Cause
Community Connect 3 workstations running Microsoft Windows XP with Service Pack 2 will exhibit a change in behaviour, compared to earlier versions of Microsoft Windows XP, relating to the way Microsoft Outlook Express resolves names. This Hotfix works around the problem by changing a GPO setting.
Requirements
Impact on your network
This Hotfix should be installed on the Forest Root (first) Community Connect 3 Domain Controller in each site.
Servers and workstations will not need to be restarted after applying this Hotfix.
Users will need to log off and back on again to pick up the change made by this Hotfix.
HFXCC3147 will update RM group policy objects for all RM user types to edit the Registry key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Identities such that it includes a DWORD subkey called 'Locked Down' with a value of 0.
Known issue
On some networks it has been observed that implementing this change to group policy prevents users from running Microsoft Outlook Express at all.
If you choose to install HFXCC3147 and find that Microsoft Outlook Express no longer runs, you should undo the change by following the 'rollback' steps in the Installation Instructions below.
If this fix has not worked on your network, there is no other solution at the time of writing (Microsoft has stated that they will not be providing a fix for Microsoft Outlook Express on Microsoft Windows XP). If you are in this situation then users can still send emails by choosing the recipient's name from the Display Names dialogue box, or by typing in the first few letters of the recipient's email address (as opposed to nickname or name) - name resolution works correctly if the email address is used in to To: field.
Download Instructions
HFXCC3147 is only available upon request from RM Support Services.
