Critical Update to Local Support Tools [HFXCC3156]
Published Date : 30 May 2006 Last Updated : 13 Feb 2020 Content Ref: DWN635897

Description

**Please note this only applies to Community Connect 3™ and RM Smart-Tools 3 networks**

Note: Any references to Community Connect 3™ in this document apply equally to RM Smart-Tools 3.

Before installing any software update, please refer to TEC90813 and DWN59018 on the RM Support Web site. These articles detail RM's recommendations regarding Software Update installation and support.

HFXCC3156 can be installed on to Community Connect 3 networks with Local Support Tools. The Update fully supersedes HFXCC3104.

Platforms

Community Connect 3 networks with Local Support Tools.

Note: This Update fully supersedes HFXCC3104.

Symptoms

This Update addresses three issues relating to the RM LST Station Agent (RM LST SAG):

  1. In certain circumstance LST can leave the C:\ drive mounted to the RM LST SAG\Temp folder. This is indicated by the C:\ RM LST SAG\Temp folder appearing with a drive icon rather than a folder icon.  This prevents users logging on to the station and requires a rebuild to fix. This symptoms of this issue are:
    • Long station boot-up and logon times.
    • Within the RM Management Console, the Remote Task options to Rebuild Workstation and Restore Workstation are disabled for affected workstations.
    • Locally cached profiles may inherit the security settings from C:\Documents and Settings with the result that users with locally cached profiles are unable to log on.
  1. On some workstations it was noticed that after booting up, the workstation may not perform an LST shutdown or restart command. The workstation would either remain at the logon screen with the LST warning message displayed, or hang with a plain blue background. This seemed to be more prominent on older, non RM hardware.
  2. Some screensavers prevent LST from restarting or shutting down workstations when they are at the logon screen.

Cause

The drive mounting symptom (1) is caused by a workstation shutting down unexpectedly when LST is investigating the partitions on the workstation, leaving the partition mounted to RM LST SAG\Temp. This is resolved by checking and de-mounting the Temp folder when SAG starts up.

The LST shutdown or restart symptom (2) is caused by RM LST SAG timing out when waiting for the RM Logon Provider window in order to shutdown/restart the station. The timeout values are now increased and are configurable in the registry.

The screensaver symptom (3) is a result of certain types of screensaver not being detected by the RM LST SAG component. The component will now terminate the process of any screensaver running at the logon screen.

It is recommended that you apply this Update if you are using Local Support Tools. The Update can be applied to any Community Connect 3™ network with Local Support Tools.

HFXCC3156 should be installed on all Community Connect 3 domain controllers. Servers will not need to be restarted after applying this Update.

Requirements

It is recommended that you apply this Update if you are using Local Support Tools.

HFXCC3156 should be applied to all Community Connect 3 domain controllers beginning with the Forest Root. No servers will need to be restarted.

Workstations with Symptom 1 (C:\ drive mounted to the RM LST SAG\Temp folder) will need to be rebuilt. Workstations with symptoms 2 and 3 will need to be rebooted so that RM Application Agent can automatically update the workstation.

The installation of HFXCC3156 will install the new version of RM LST SAG and perform an UpdatePackageList on the server. You should be aware that the first reboot of all workstations after installing the update will upgrade the workstations.
