Update for RM Explorer 2 [HFXCC3182]
Published Date : 02 Apr 2007 Last Updated : 13 Feb 2020 Content Ref: DWN838207

Description

**Please note this only applies to Community Connect 3™ and RM Smart-Tools 3 networks.**

Note: Any references to Community Connect 3 in this document apply equally to RM Smart-Tools 3.

Before installing any Software Update, please refer to TEC90813 and DWN59018 on the RM Support Web site. These articles detail RM's recommendations regarding Software Update installation and support.

Platforms

It is recommended that you apply this update if you are using the primary desktop on Community Connect 3, ie using the RM Explorer 2 as the student desktop by using the RM Explorer UserType.

HFXCC3182 should be installed on the Community Connect 3 Forest Root server. The server will not need to be restarted after applying this Software Update. The policy update will automatically replicate to other servers.

On some networks we have noticed the previously released Software Update HFXCC3133 was needed to be re-applied prior to HFXCC3182 to fully resolve the issue. Therefore, we recommend the re-installation of HFXCC3133 (please refer to DWN468459 in Other Useful Articles) prior to the installation of HFXCC3182.

Symptoms

Program sets are delivered inconsistently to the Start Menu when RM Explorer 2 is running at startup. Logging off and on seems to increase the number of shortcuts until all of them are delivered. Desktop Agent is updating the Start Menu at the same time as RM Explorer 2 is trying to read it. Because the folder is a special Microsoft Windows folder, a shell folder, access is blocked and so some shortcuts cannot be delivered. The clash between the two components is caused because RM Explorer 2 is launched by a GPO and it is not possible to predict exactly when a policy is applied.

Note: Both HFXCC3133 and HFXCC3182 must be applied on the Forest Root Domain Controller only. If these updates are ran on replica servers they will appear to complete successfully but will, in fact, make no changes to the Group Policy Objects. To verify the success of both updates please check the GPOUpdater.txt file located at:

D:\RMNetwork\RMManage\Logfiles

Cause

RM Explorer 2 was launched by a user type GPO. The fix launches RM Explorer 2 using the Gatekeeper mechanism which is also used to launch Desktop Agent. By ensuring that Desktop Agent completes before RM Explorer 2 is launched, we avoid the clash over the Start Menu. The RM Explorer UserType policy is modified so that RM Explorer 2 is no longer launched from it directly. The Gatekeeper mechanism is modified to include RM Explorer 2 with appropriate settings to ensure it launches at the right time.
